‘The spike in volatility has exposed the sum of all fears for traders of stocks, bonds, currencies and commodities. The VIX Index – the so-called fear gauge – has surged this week, an potentially ominous sign for equity markets. The VIX was hovering around 20 on Thursday, a reprieve from the 40 per cent spike on Monday to around 24, it’s highest level since January. The last time the VIX – a measure of volatility on S&P500 Index options – spent a sustained time above 20 was between October and December when Australia’s S&P/ASX200 Index tumbled from around 6100 points to a low of 5470 points amid a slide in global markets.’
