‘Theresa May’s long-term future as prime minister is in doubt after her gamble on an snap election to shore up her Brexit negotiating position backfired dramatically, leaving Britain with a hung parliament less than two weeks before critical talks with Brussels are due to begin. In an extraordinary result that plunges the UK into another period of political instability, voters rejected Mrs May’s bid to increase her Conservative Party’s majority in the 650-seat House of Commons and secure a personal mandate to secure her vision of a “hard” Brexit.’
