19 May 2017 (AFR) – Jobs grow at fastest since 2008 – Jobless rate falls to 5.7 per cent for month of April

‘Employment growth has matched the fastest start to a calendar year since 2008, raising a glimmer of hope that unemployment will begin trending lower this year. While there are still significant weak spots across the labour market, including high under-employment and weak wages growth, official figures showed employers added 37,400 jobs in April, seven times more than was forecast. The jobless rate fell to 5.7 per cent, close to a four-year low, from 5.9 per cent in March, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported on Thursday.’
