7 Feb 2017 (AFR) – Resources earnings ensure end of Australian companies’ profit recession

‘Earnings upgrades in the resources sector have set the scene for the most upbeat reporting season in three years but investors are not counting on a boom in dividends or capex in return. Australian companies are on track to post earnings per share growth of 13 per cent in 2016-17 and the interim profit season underway will show most of that is coming from mining stocks. Consensus forecasts indicate the resources sector is heading for 58 per cent growth in earnings, fuelling speculation around the potential for capital management initiatives. Rio Tinto reports its annual results on Wednesday.’
