26 Nov 2016 (AFR) – Here’s what killed the bond bull – and it wasn’t Trump

‘If you are wondering how on earth Donald Trump managed to single-handedly flip the script in global financial markets, the answer is: he didn’t. It’s tempting to see it that way, though. After all, all four major US sharemarket indices hit simultaneous record highs this week – a “grand slam” that hasn’t happened since 1999. But the idea that these trends pre-date Trump should provide some comfort that the recent moves, while likely over the top and vulnerable to pullbacks, are not without foundation. It also means they could well continue into 2017.
