‘Matthew Grounds, the boss of UBS Australia, might be right when he says there’s no point buying the major S&P ASX 200 index if you want to make money. But if the latest returns produced by fund managers are any guide you wouldn’t want to invest with them either. Most fund managers can’t even beat the index, according to the latest results of a mid-year review of active versus passive index investing, which creates a real dilemma for investors.
