13 Oct 2012 (AFR) – Hopes rise for a Santa rally on the stockmarket

‘Strong gains in the sharemarket over the past two months have divided opinion on whether equities will enjoy the traditional end-of-year rally.’

‘This seasonal jump in the market, affectionately referred to as the “Santa rally”, is one of the more dependable trading patterns for Australian shares and for global stocks.’ <snipped…>

‘Australian companies, with the exception of those in resources, have suffered five straight years of earnings declines, and mining and energy stocks look like they will be doing it tough this year, Mr Klassen said. US market watchers echo this view. Analysts are predicting that American companies will report their first quarterly earnings decline in the current reporting season.
